A couple of Pokémon collectors

Spread the love

By Lisa K. Berton

When you find someone to love, that is magical. When that someone embraces something you love, it's devotion. Meet Jaymee Gerard and his girlfriend, Jessica Byron, otherwise known as The Awesome Couple. These Derry, New Hampshire residents met while on the job 9 years ago. In the time since they became a couple, Jessica has taken Jaymee's love of all things Pokémon to the next level.

Jaymee, according to his lovely lady, has always been a collector. This is a statement he confirmed later in our conversation. His mom still had his stash of Pokémon cards in her home after he moved out and sent over his collection little by little. Jessica set into motion and began organizing them.

Spring forward a few years and they have made Pokémon pay up. With an online store and dealer space at conventions and flea markets, the duo sells video games, trading cards, stuffed figures, mystery (grab) bags, pillows, hats, key rings, and more.

Back to the personal collection. The preferred method of trading card acquisitions is currently trading. Previous methods included, and still do on occasion, trips to yard sales, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and Savers along with Internet detective work on Craigslist. Fortunately, people also call them wanting to buy, sell, and trade.

When asked what they're still looking for, Jaymee said to complete the Gold Star card set. Seeing as how he described himself as a completionist, it's understandable. It's also why Jessica won't allow Pop figures (over 3,000 characters) at home.  His greatest find was a first edition Charizard, described as the Holy Grail of Pokémon trading cards, thanks to a seller who wanted to dispose of a culmination.

While Jaymee is enjoying a world of Pokémon, Jessica's personal collection consists of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. Her latest purchase? A handmade lamp formed from various old TMNT pieces.
